Returned here after about 7 years or so and the Great Pyramid of Chichen Itza still hasn't changed much. Chichen Itza is one of the most popular Mayan ruins on the Yucatan Peninsula. Most of us tourists aren't aware of the one hour difference so there was already a long line by the time we arrived which was around 9:30 or so. It's about 2.5 hour drive from Playa Del Carmen. 

Our next stop was Cenote Ik Kil. It was already getting hot so we left Chichen Itza early. Cenote Ik Kil is also one of many tourists favorite spots and I can see why. There are lots of interesting vines hanging from the opening all the way to the bottom which I thought make the place quite photogenic. You can also jump off the rocks into the refreshing water and swim with the little fish. 

Close in proximity of Cenote Ik Kil is Cenote X'keken. X'keken is very dark because it's mostly covered underground. The water here is cooler and there are lots of little fish that nibble feet. This cenote reminds me of Luray Carverns, right here in VA.

Travel tips:

Start your day early. It gets very crowded and hot around 10.

Get a stroller if you travel with young children. Chichen Itza is very spread out!

Wear water shoes. The bottom of the cenotes is rock and very slippery.
